The length and type of warranties offered on projectors vary between manufacturers and models.
Typically lower cost projectors offer shorter warranties (e.g. 1 to 2 years) and/or lower levels of service while higher cost models can have longer warranties (3 to 5 years) and/or a higher levels of service.
When choosing a projector, we recommend checking the warranty that is included and that you are happy with the level.
On some projector the warranty can be upgraded or extended so do ask us about options available.
In this short guide, we will explain what the different warranty types mean.
Return to Base or RTB is the most basic warranty level available and the most commonly offered by projector manufacturers. It means that if your projector develops a fault, it needs to be sent back to a service centre where it will be repaired before being sent back.
The time it takes to repair the projector varies depending on the service centre's workload at the time as well as the availability of spare parts but in most cases it is completed within 2 weeks or less.
On-site warranties means an engineer will visit your address to repair your product on-site.
If the product cannot be easily repaired on-site, the manufacturer may, at their sole discretion, replace it with another projector of similar age and specifications. The replacements often are refurbished models.
Response time for on-site warranties is usually quick (within 1 or 2 working days). We recommend this level of warranty if you need your projector at all times.
As the title suggests, Collect, Repair and Return warranties, also known as CRR, mean that in the event of a fault, the manufacturer will arrange for your projector to be collected from your address to be delivered to a service centre where it will be repaired before being sent back to you.
As is the case for RTB warranties, the repair time varies based on the service centre's workload as well as the availability of spare parts.
Similarly to on-site warranties, de-install/re-install projector warranties include a site visit by an engineer to repair or replace your projector.
The added value compared to on-site warranties is that if your projector is ceiling or wall mounted and no higher than 3m or 3.5m from the ground, the engineer will de-install it from the mount to carry out the service and then re-install it on the mount.
Projector warranties normally only cover faults arising from manufacturing defects on the main unit itself and excluding consumables.
They do not cover wear and tear, faults caused by user error, user damage or usage that is not within their instructions and guidelines such as lack of regular maintenance or lack of airflow around the unit causing overheating.
Many manufacturers now also include a separate warranty on the lamp or laser light source that is supplied with the projector.
The length of the lamp / laser light source warranty is normally measured in days or hours of use whichever comes first. It generally varies from model to model between 90 days and 5 years or around 1000hrs for lamps and around 12.000hrs for laser.
Most manufacturers do not offer this service or not on all of their models.
If it is essential that you have access to a projector, we would highly recommend buying a model with an on-site swap out service to ensure it is repaired or replaced within days rather than weeks.
Projector manufacturers often offer warranty upgrade options.
If you need a longer warranty or a higher level of service (e.g. upgrade from return to base to on-site swap out) do ask us about optional warranties.
If a new projector is faulty on arrival, it would normally be considered "Dead On Arrival" or DOA.
For most manufacturers, in the first 7 days (some manufacturers allow for a longer period) after delivery, a faulty projector will be swapped for a new one rather than repaired or swapped for a refurbished unit under warranty.
Some manufacturers allow the remainder of the original warranty to be transferred to the new owner when a used projector is sold on. So if you bought a projector with a 3 year warranty and sell it on after 1 year, the buyer may benefit from the remaining 2 years of warranty.
This is not the case for all manufacturers so do check the terms and conditions if this is something that is important to you.
