The Owl Labs Meeting Owl Pro is an all-in-one video conferencing device combining camera, microphone and speaker, but it is not like your usual all-in-one systems.
You may be familiar with the typical video conferencing systems which provide a wide-angle view from one side of the room and may be able to pan and zoom in on a specific person or area. The Meeting Owl Pro is different: it is able to capture a panoramic view of the whole room, while also automatically focussing and shifting between speakers in split screen, zoomed views. Remote participants can now get the experience of an in-person meeting from wherever they are.
Meeting Owl Pro Features
As mentioned above, the Meeting Owl Pro is an all-in-one video conferencing system.
It combines a 360° camera, microphone and speaker into one portable, stylish device.
The 360° camera captures video in full HD 1080p resolution for a high-quality view of the whole room. Remote participants are able to see everyone in the room in the 360° panoramic view window on their screen and feel as if they were present at the meeting in person, not missing anything.
The smart motion and voice activated focus then allows the system to automatically zoom in, follow and focus on the speaker who is shown in a split screen, zoomed view on screen. The Meeting Owl Pro shifts quickly and easily between speakers, keeping track of previous speakers.
To ensure everyone in the room can be heard clearly from anywhere (up to 5.5m away), the Meeting Owl Pro features an 8-microphone array. Noise and echo cancellation means the focus is on the speaker without interference.
And team members can also hear remote participants thanks to the built-in 360° tri-speaker which projects sound in all directions.
Easy to use
The Meeting Owl Pro is simple to use and compatible with virtually all web-based video conferencing software.
Setup is quick and easy: simply plug the USB cable in the device and your computer, open your video conferencing software, select the Meeting Owl Pro as your camera, microphone and speakers and you are ready to go.
Compatible with both Windows 10 and MacOS, it works with most web-based video conferencing platforms including Zoom, Skype, GoToMeeting, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, BlueJeans etc. so you can continue using your favourite software while enjoying the added benefits of Meeting Owl Pro.
Meeting Owl Smartphone App
Although not strictly necessary to use the Meeting Owl Pro, a smartphone app is available on both Android and iOS to provides added functionality.
Available on your usual app stores, the Meeting Owl phone app allows you to connect wirelessly to nearby Meeting Owl Pro devices to control the camera, access meeting analytics etc.
Using the app, you can control the camera to lock and zoom on a person or area. This can be useful for example when you want to focus on a particular presenter or on a whiteboard in the room.
Also while the panoramic view is one of the features that make the Meeting Owl Pro stand out from the rest, when it is not required, you can switch it off using the phone app.
If you want only specific people to be able to change the in-app settings of your device, you can use the Passcode Lock to password protect the settings.
The app gives you access to meeting analytics data which includes information such as how many meetings you have had, how long they lasted, which days are your busiest or least busy and the average number of people in meetings.
In addition to the features above, iPad users also have access to Digital Whiteboard which turns the Meeting Owl Stage View into a live whiteboard. When writing or drawing on the iPad, remote participants can see the notes and collaborate with in-person participants in real-time. In-room participants will be able to see the whiteboard on the display screen.
Installation
The Meeting Owl Pro weighs just 1.2kg so it is portable enough to be easily moved from room to room if you need but the typical application would be for the device to be standing in the middle of a table in a meeting or conference room.
If you are worried about your Meeting Owl Pro being moved or stolen, there is an optional K-lock adapter available which attaches to the bottom of the camera and provides a Kensington T-bar lock slot.
Where tabletop mounting is not possible or available, the Meeting Owl Pro can be mounted on a tripod using a standard tripod screw with ¼"-20 (6.35mm) thread (max 8mm length), on a stand or on a mobile trolley, securing the device with adhesive Velcro strips on the bottom if necessary.
The Meeting Owl Pro can also be ceiling mounted using a ceiling mount with the same screw type as a standard tripod.
When ceiling mounting, the image needs to be flipped vertically using the smartphone app.
This is ideal for colleges and universities who have circular lecture halls for example as the camera can be placed in the centre of the space, coming down from the ceiling.
Owl Connect
A single Meeting Owl Pro is suitable for rooms up to 6m x 4.5m.
For larger rooms, you can pair two devices together using Owl Connect on the smartphone app and extend the range by up to 8 feet in any direction.
Applications
The Owl Meeting Pro is suited to many different applications.
The most obvious is corporate meeting and conference rooms, but it is equally at home in other settings such as:
- Education: The Meeting Owl Pro is popular in schools, colleges and universities where it is used for virtual or hybrid lessons and lectures.
- Local government: Councils are able to record and show meetings online allowing more people access and the ability to view discussions at a time that suits them.
- Healthcare: The Meeting Owl Pro can be used for many different applications in healthcare, from keeping remote employees involved with their teams to connecting patients and their families while in hospital or providing healthcare services to patient remotely where possible.
- Legal: Some courts in the USA have used the Meeting Owl Pro for virtual courtroom proceedings while social distancing measures were in place while law firms have used the system to connect with remote employees or communicate between offices, as well as to enable clients and attorneys to virtually connect to courtrooms.
